Story: The article follows stories of Gambian migrants like Alagie, Rohey, Musa Faye and others who left The Gambia irregularly (by the “backway,” via smuggling routes through North Africa and across the Mediterranean) hoping for better lives in Europe. Many lived hard experiences — refuge camps, exploitation, trauma — only to end up being deported back to The Gambia. On return, they face severe challenges rebuilding their lives: economic struggle, mental health crises, broken families, and feeling stranded between two worlds. Despite all this, many still dream of returning to Europe, believing it holds the promise they left for.
