2021 Awards Categories HEADING AWARD

There are 20 Award categories this year. Sixteen (16) categories are open to journalists to submit entries; three (3) categories are available for voting by the general public; and one (1) Special category for the GPU to award two individuals and or institutions for their outstanding contribution and support to journalists and media development. The Journalist of the year category is selected by the judges from the list of entrants whose work stands out most amongst the rest of the participants. Entries under categories opened to journalists can be submitted via the Submit Entry Link on our website. Method of voting for categories open to public voting (Television Station of the year, Radio Station of the year, Community/Rural radio station of the year) will be published in due course (by 1st August 2021).

Prizes: Winners shall receive a trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize.

Entries should cover reporting in any aspect of the economy or business venture

Entries should relate to reporting on sports - coverage of sporting events; business behind sport and features on personalities.

Entries should relate to environmental issues: protection of the environment; conservation; climate change and innovative ways to combat environmental damage.

Entries should include coverage of prevention, protection and treatment of diseases and conditions; cost and development of healthcare; and the impact of health issues on communities.

Entries should relate to reporting on any aspect of women’s issues in the Gambia.

Entries should relate to reporting on any aspect of issues involving children in The Gambia.

Entries should relate to investigative reporting on any aspect of issues in The Gambia.

Entries should relate to Migration reporting on any aspect of issues involving Gambian migrants.

Entries should relate to reporting on any aspect of travel and tourism including how it affects the economy and socio-cultural settings.

Entries should cover any coverage of agriculture– farming, animal husbandry, aquaculture etc.

Entries for this category should cover reports dealing with issues of transitional justice and Court reporting.

This category awards the overall best story from all the submissions in all the categories across all type of media – print, radio, TV and online/multimedia platforms. This category does not require entries. It will be chosen by the judges

Entries should relate to reporting on any aspect of culture, Arts and entertainment including how it affects the economy and socio-cultural settings.

Entries should cover any aspect of photo journalism and the entry must be published within the 2021 award entry timeline under consideration.

The Gambia Press Union will give special awards to individuals and institutions for their outstanding contribution and support to journalists and media development. These are not available for entry submissions.

Entries should cover reporting in any aspect of Human rights.

Entries should cover reporting in any aspect of Human trafficking and migration.

Entries should cover reporting on Gambian politics and political activities.
