Story: This story focuses on how Gambian women are actively leading the fight against climate change, even though the climate sector is traditionally male dominated. In many decision making spaces, women are underrepresented, yet they often bear the brunt of climate impacts especially in rural areas where they rely heavily on agriculture, natural resources, and informal economies. In The Gambia, climate change is affecting women’s lives in direct and devastating ways. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, flooding, and soil degradation are threatening food security, water access, and income. These challenges deepen existing gender inequalities, making women more vulnerable to poverty and displacement.Despite these obstacles, Gambian women are stepping forward as educators, innovators, and environmental stewards. The story showcases the work of individuals like Fatou Njie, a solar technician training women in renewable energy, Maimuna Jabbi, an environmental activist educating school children and Fatou Jeng, who is leading a major coastal tree planting project and youth-led environmental organization, as well as women farmers at the Bakau Women’s garden, promoting organic farming.
