Story: The story centers on the shooting of Gambian truck driver Amadou Juma Camara and his apprentice Malick by Senegalese soldiers near Keelan, close to Kanilai, while they were transporting timber from Soloben in the Casamance region. Juma Camara sustained injuries and was treated at the Ndemban Clinic, but his apprentice Malick disappeared without a trace after the incident. Significance of the Story The incident shed light on the human cost of the timber trade along the Gambia–Senegal border. It also raised questions about the safety of Gambian drivers working in high-risk zones and the accountability of armed forces operating in these cross-border areas. More importantly, it gave voice to families left in anguish — Juma Camara’s mother and Malick’s relatives — who searched tirelessly across Casamance and Foni villages for answers but found none.
